Can a Chiropractor Help with Peripheral Neuropathy Treatment?

Written By Caputo Chiropractic Center on February 22, 2021

Peripheral NeuropathyYour peripheral nervous system links the nerves from your spinal cord and brain to the rest of your body. These nerves send signals about any physical sensations in your arms, feet, hands, internal organs, or any other part of your body back to your brain.

When these nerves are damaged or destroyed, it can cause peripheral neuropathy. The nerves malfunction and can tell your brain that your body is experiencing pain when it isn’t, and vice versa.

A chiropractor can work with you to develop a peripheral neuropathy treatment plan. Read on for more information.

Types of Peripheral Neuropathy

A common sign of peripheral neuropathy is weakness and pain in your feet and hands, but it will also manifest in other parts of the body as well. Some examples of the condition are:

  • Bell’s Palsy: This condition results in a temporary paralysis or weakness in your face muscles. It is caused by the nerve that controls the muscles in your face becoming swollen, inflamed, or compressed. One side of your face will become stiff or droop. You will experience symptoms a couple of weeks after you have an eye or ear infection, or a cold.
  • Carpal Tunnel: Patients will experience pain due to a large amount of pressure on their wrist and the median nerve being compressed. Repeated motion and repetitive overextension can lead to this condition as well. Where you position your wrists while on the computer or prolonged use of power tools that cause vibrations can both cause carpal tunnel.

Peripheral Neuropathy Treatments

Chiropractors will use different treatment options such as spinal adjustment, spinal decompression, and massage therapy to treat peripheral neuropathy. Your chiropractor will evaluate your general health and symptoms, creating a treatment plan that is tailored specifically for your needs.

For carpal tunnel syndrome, outfitting a patient with a wrist brace will help the nerves from being pinched or compressed, reducing numbness and pain. Bell’s palsy can be cleared up with spinal adjustments to relieve pressure that was caused by the infection the patient has. No matter the cause of your peripheral neuropathy, your chiropractor will find a treatment plan for you.
