What is the Difference Between Bulging and Herniated Discs?

Many people think that bulging and herniated discs are the same thing—which isn’t true.

When you have a herniated disc, there is a crack in the outer layer of one of your spinal discs. This allows the soft material inside of your disc to protrude. Certain repetitive movements in your work or lifestyle can put stress on the spine, weakening the area. Spinal injuries can cause wear and tear on your discs, resulting in tears or ruptures. Herniated discs tend to be more painful than a bulging one.

A bulging disc doesn’t have a crack like a herniated disc. The disc itself starts to sag and bulges out of its usual space. More of the disc is affected with this condition than with a herniated disc. The pain caused by a bulging disc can increase over time, with patients experiencing tingling in one or both legs, paralysis below their waist, pain in the neck and lower back, and radiating pain into the arms.

Once you are diagnosed with a herniated or bulging disc, a chiropractor will work with you to develop a non-invasive treatment plan.

Herniated and Bulging Disc Treatments

The most common way a chiropractor can treat herniated or bulging discs is with spinal decompression. Your chiropractor will safely harness you to a traction table, gently stretching your spine. It relieves pressure off the nerves in your back, providing immediate pain relief. Spinal decompression also encourages oxygen and nutrient flow in your body, resulting in quicker healing. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, spinal decompression will relieve you of the pain from bulging and herniated discs.
