7 Signs You May Have Whiplash (and Why You Should Visit a Chiropractor After an Accident)

Written By Caputo Chiropractic Center on January 17, 2020

auto injury treatmentThe condition known as “whiplash” is commonly associated with motor vehicle accidents and is caused by the abrupt jerking motion of the head and neck upon impact.

Whiplash treatment with chiropractic care helps bring about swift relief for patients experiencing lingering discomfort. Some of the most common signs of whiplash include any of the following:

1. Restricted Neck Movement

Perhaps the most common and obvious symptom of whiplash is the painful inability to turn the head from one way to the other. Oftentimes, this symptom doesn’t appear until 24-48 hours after the accident.

2. Headaches

Car accident treatment can also address the onset of headaches, which is not unusual after an auto accident. With careful and gentle spinal manipulation, many patients report that headaches are reduced or eliminated completely.

3. Tenderness

Back and neck muscles may be tender to the touch, making sleep and routine daily activities painfully unbearable. Whiplash treatment can directly address this inflammation and soreness, including laser therapy sessions targeted at the affected areas.

4. Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain can be a surprising whiplash symptom and is often caused by a concept known as “referred pain.” Referred pain happens when pain is felt in a musculoskeletal area aside from the direct impact location.

5. Dizziness

Chiropractic care can address issues including dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance. These symptoms often accompany the lingering neck and back pain associated with whiplash and may be eliminated through regular adjustments or therapeutic massage.

6. Numbness or Tingling

A serious auto accident can cause chaos in the spinal column, particularly in the sensitive nerve endings found in along the neck and back. This can lead to a condition known as “cervical radiculopathy”, which essentially means the nerves are compressed and inflamed.

7. Muscle Spasms

When the neck and back become misaligned and weak due to whiplash, car accident treatment often addresses the onset of muscle spasms. These spasms can occur when certain muscle groups are over- or under-performing due to imbalance.
